A recent survey published by IMS Business Report found that electronic dance music ranked 3rd for the most popular musical genre. If these results were applied to the world’s population, it would be estimated that 1.5 billion people listen to electronic dance music. Electronic dance music came after pop and rock, and beat hip-hop, rap, trap and R&B. The survey was conducted among 19,000 people in 18 different countries, aged 16 to 64 years.
When it comes to sales on Beatport, techno came first with techhouse at number two. Techno came out on top most years, with the exception of a 2016 drop to 2nd place. When it comes to the highest paid DJs, Calvin Harris has always come first, but there has been an overall drop in what DJs earn. Although they still earn a crazy amount of money.
It seems that electronic dance music is becoming more and more popular. It can be heard in stores, in advertisements, in movies and video games. The once underground sound is becoming the sound of our time. Rock and pop are still very strong and it’s no surprise that they come first and second. Rock will be especially popular with older participants, and pop will be popular at all ages.
